Highgate Hill Residence

The following are the presentation slide I prepared for the Pin-Up on the week three tutorial.

The building was designed by Richard Kirk Architects. The house is a three level House located in one of the oldest ridgeline in Brisbane. It takes a rectangular form spread across the three level, ground floor has two planes of open plan design in the horizontal and vertical planes; middle level extends out from the street, used as a public-ish space.
As a result of the unique topography of the site as well as the requirement to connect the residence to an outdoor plane, the residences structural resolution showcases a different face on each side of the building.

Highgate Hill Residence’s adaptation to its microenvironment can also be noted through its response to the dominance of the context. ’…the house is entirely clad in timber and uses timber glazed façade systems where each species is selected to age in response to its orientation and weathering…’ states by Kirk.
Through the overall use of light filtration into all parts of the house , the materials applied on this building and views to natural environment outside this house makes you constantly aware of the surrounding landscape.

Vertical timber screen act like facade, works as series of layers laid over the building volume.
This building was welly responds the orientation of the building, by place the southern and western of the house reveals the vertical and monumental character, where northern and eastern side living space embracing the landscapes, ground most intimate, material and detailing deliberately fine and diminutive to draw a connection to the surrounding environment.

The opening has a siganificent scale to allow the internal floor plate opens up to  outdoor space.  Then have a lot platforms if constructed ground plane of timber deck.

The facade which made by timber allows the breaze and sunlight into the room, and keep the private area un-shown to the outside world.

By place all bedrooms in the upper floor as private area, place main public and shared space in the middle floor near entrance and place guest room and media space in the lower floor, this house clearly separated private and public area.
The entrance hides what is to be revealed later after journeying through the house.
The Architect, Richard Kirk, has created a plan that acknowledges open and practical living whilst still incorporating the intimacy and privacy requirements for the respective members of the household.
The materials used on Highgate hill residence create a unique sensory experience, and are combined with structural elements that suggest intimacy. The privacy created by aspects of the residence allows living areas to open up to built platforms of timber decking and lawn, additionally utilizing the gully views beyond.

Attention has been taken to the orientation of the house in terms of blocking off the harsh sunlight but still allowing light to be filtered in. The detailed spaces and use of materials and layout make this house something people would want to experience living in.
